Bones, Season One – A Good Show About Partners in Crime

by

This show made me curious for a loooong time. It didn’t appeal to my mother because of its name but something about it kept me reading up on it. It wasn’t until I read one reviewers (you know who you are!) thoughts that I really became intrigued by it. Recently I was in the video store and randomly decided I’d rent just the first disc – after all, what was the harm in that? Here are my thoughts on this FOX series.

Bones, Season One (2005) TV Show Review

Relationships are not Dr. Temperance Brennan’s strong suits. She doesn’t get pop culture references, and would rather be distant emotionally than do a poor job at work. As one of the best forensic anthropologists in the country, Brennan (Emily Deschanel) has formed a working partnership of sorts with the FBI. She assists in solving unsolvable cases. Her FBI partner is special agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz). The tenuous relationship the pair of them has is complicated. Brennan relies solely on facts and Booth is more of an educated guess type of guy. Reluctantly, Booth again works with Brennan, and the two of them set about finding out how a young woman’s body ended up in a body of water.

During the course of the investigation Booth and “Bones” (Booth’s appropriate nickname for Brennan but one which she detests) work the case, but always return to a political connection. Together with their team of “squints,” Dr. Jack Hodgins (TJ Thyne), and Angela Montenegro (Michaela Conlin), they slowly piece together the clues. On the outside is Bones’ new assistant Zach Addy (Eric Millegan), a new hire who’s eager to please as they begin this new case.

Personally, there were a number of things keeping this series at arms length. Partially, it was from a somewhat mistaken assumption (an assumption that is a part of the show in later seasons) and another reason was because I didn’t think I needed to add yet another show to my already long list of favorites (yeah, my TV-on-DVD collection has grown from one or two to about… well, let’s just say, it’s way more than it should be). Turns out, I was right to resist it as long as it did because all it took was those first six episodes on that first disc rental for me to know that I’d be buying the show. And, ironically, my mother now likes the show probably better than even I do.

Bones, Season One
If you are a medical person or come from a family of medical professionals, this likely won’t bother you. But it’s more likely to make everyone a bit queasy. Bodies are found in varying stages of rot and some are even ripped apart by goodness knows what – that is likely a picture you don’t even want to think about, so moving on. Aside from that, this is a really intriguing if not slightly abrasive show. Airing on Fox for seven years now, it has a following (and has even given wings to a spin-off series). It’s also worth mentioning that Bones’ characters not only disbelieves in God but she doesn’t even believe in His existence. As a viewer who can separate fiction from reality, I do enjoy Bones.
Bones is TV14 for bodies in varying states of decay – translation: they are gross. Numerous sexual terms and innuendos begin to be an easy part of dialogue. Characters talk freely about sexual relations in their proper medical terms being all scientists. Profanity is little compared to other content concerns, but there are uses of sh*t and others.

  1. It is quite easy to get caught up in that show, isn't it? ;-) I love it….even though it is a bit "gruesome" at times.

Who would be your favorite character?

But I understand with keeping shows at arm's length since you can't add another one to your plate….White Collar has now been added =D

  2. Easy!? You bet! =) I've gotten through three seasons already! Sometimes it is a bit… gross, but I love the characters – and the creativity of the writing.

Favorite character… I don't know. Honestly I love them all. At times Angela is my favorite, but then other times, Booth is my favorite character – and then other times it is someone else entirely! They are all such fun. =)

So glad you enjoyed White Collar, girl! I love, love that one! It is witty and mysterious. How can a show do better than that!?

  3. I just started watching this show after reading your post on it…well I should say, I'm half way through the first season and I find myself pretty much hooked on it. While I am a HUGE Castle fan and can't help thinking the mysteries around the killings are better in Castle (course it is a different emphasis on that show-so maybe not right to compare it to, too much) but I like the cast dynamics in Bones and it has kept my interest so far. I can't wait to finish season one. If I keep liking it, I will move on to season 2! Thanks for the recommendo!

  4. Cool! I am so glad you are enjoying this series, Jeanine – me, too. =D (I am 1/4 the way through S4 already, which is a bit extreme, I know.)

Love Castle! It is one of my very favs. I think that one tends to be a bit more comedic but… it has grown a LOT in the four seasons, so perhaps not anymore. Bones' case files are really creative – some of them leave you with your mouth hanging open at the shear unbelievably of them.

The characters/cast are fantastic in Bones, and it keeps getting better. I cannot wait to know what you think of S2. =)
