‘VANISHED,’ by Irene Hannon. Reviewing the 2013 release of the romantic suspense novel. Text © Rissi JC

If you have a love of a solid mystery novel, it doesn’t take much to embroil an interested reader in a good one. Few pages in, award-winning author, Irene Hannon pulls the reader into her fabulous creative skills. Hook, line and sinker.

STORY: Meet reporter Moira Harrison, a woman whose accident on a lonely road one rainy night changes everything. This leads her straight to the doorstep of the detective agency Phoenix, INC., and more specifically Cal Burke.

Retired from law enforcement, Cal is skeptical when he hears Moira’s story. A story that recounts a woman lying in the road and a Good Samaritan who never dials 911 but something about Moira intrigues Cal. Going against the clues, he takes the pro bono case, opening a Pandora’s Box full of secrets in the process.

Vanished, by Irene Hannon | Book Review

Considering only the characters, this is another good one. Whether it’s the easy-going camaraderie and trust between the three P.I.’s (Dev, Connor and Cal), or the sweet tenderness that develops between Moira and her leading man, Cal. There isn’t a weak link in the bunch. All of these develop well even in the moments when their pasts are skimmed over.

And this says nothing about the intriguing story. Keeping pace is a fabulous, well-crafted novel that tells a surprisingly believable scenario in a thriller of a tale. If there was one thing I find a bit trite is finding the heroine in danger yet again in the final climax. As a writer, I “get” this plot device but as a reader, it becomes tiresome to encounter in book after book. That isn’t enough to stop me from recommending this – perhaps even as the best of the Hannon novel’s I’ve yet to read. To say I will be anxiously waiting the second in the series is an understatement.

IN CONCLUSION: This is nail-biting suspense at its best. Irene Hannon again scores with this, the first in a new series that is sure to hold your interest.

  1. Loved getting your thoughts–I agree Moira getting "in harm's way" has been done with other female heroines in other books…..but what book doesn't copy itself anymore?! I still loved it though =D

    1. As did I enjoy reading your review, Ella (and am happy to see your smiling face here again :D).

Oh, I am well aware that so many works of fiction are "copy-cats" – heck, my own scribbling's copy "staple" ideas. From a writing perspective, I totally "get" this twist but from a readers, it's sometimes frustrating(!) …in the end, it mattered not: I loved it! :)

  2. I would have commented last night had I not been so tired… lol

SO glad you enjoyed this one as much as I, Rissi! I'm a big Irene Hannon fan and I agree, the bad guy kidnapping the girl does get kind of old in a sense that it's predictable. I cannot wait for the next one to come out later this year. I'm sure it will be just as great. :D

    1. Oh, that's okay, girl. Hope your Internet is all back up to speed now. :)

As am I! This was such a great, suspenseful read. Loved it! Being an aspiring writer, I do sympathize with being able to create some suspense in the climax, hence the reason the heroine is put in danger (well that and allowing the hero to rescue her ;D) but as a reader, the repetitiveness gets old. Like you, I'm excited to read Dev's story. Should be great. :)

    2. Yes! It was fixed about a week ago and the whole family is back to normal. *big grin*

Exactly! It's like two separate views imposing in my mind. I understand, yet I want something fresh. Hehehe…

    3. That's great! I sympathize with you – I've been there.

Well said – it is two imposing views. Perhaps some new suspense novels in 2013 will take a fresh approach. :)

  3. I seriously need to start reading this author's books! They all look so exciting…yet I haven't picked one up yet :/ Thank you for the review :) Sierra
    Keep growing beautiful!

    1. *gasp*

You've not read any of these yet, girl!? Goodness, you must. If I ever find myself in a situation when I have an extra, I'd be happy for you to have it – and you'd be the first I'd offer it too. :)

Exciting is definitely a word to describe these, Sierra – they're usually pulse-pounding and fabulous all-around. Hope you enjoy!

    2. Aww that is so sweet :) Thanks so much! I've seen them at the library several times…time when my card has been full to bursting :/ I know it's terrible of me….I've really been wanting to though. Next time I see one I'll have to grab it! Sierra
      Keep growing beautiful!

    3. No, it's not terrible of you – at all. There are far too many good books out there, and we have to pick and chose. I'm being very "hard" on myself trying to nail down which authors/genres I like best. I waste enough time as it is, and I don't need to compound that by reading books that I'll have to "force" myself to read.

Hope you enjoy Irene's novels, Sierra!!!

  4. Hehehehe I will. I don't think I could ever nail it down :P I used to be in a "I always have to finish the book" mindset. But now if I don't like or enjoy it I just put it down. But I try to find books I think I'd like. Sierra
    Keep growing beautiful!

    1. Oh, I can put down a book without finishing it easily, Sierra but that's a problem if it's one I've committed to reviewing. The main reason I'm trying to figure out favored genres and such is so I can pick them out better – for years, my family generally buys books since we never have belonged to a library plus we live outside city limits. Since we don't live extravagantly, that is one of our guilty pleasures. :D

Finding authors/books to like is always better for the experience of reading and reviewing has made me more critical but I need that so it's been helpful. :)
