‘WHEN A SECRET KILLS,’ by Lynette Eason. Review of the third novel in the Deadly Reunions series. All text © Rissi JC

STORY: Jillian Carter has been gone for ten years. So long that she’s buried deep secrets, one of which could change the life of the man she still loves.

Used to taking care of herself, the Jillian who left all those years ago is not the same woman today. First she has to prove this. On the night of her high school graduation, she saw a murder. This sends her running along with a change of name, and away from the man who loved her. Now she has to make sure she lives to see the day when she no longer has to run. Most importantly, being back in her Southern home town rekindles old feelings as Jillian comes face-to-face with her past, including her friends, Serena and Alexia… and Colton; the boy she left all those years ago without a word of explanation.

When a Secret Kills, by Lynette Eason | Book Review

REVIEW: WOW! What a story and golly, what a conclusion Eason gives readers. Jillian is a wonderful character we come to know as is the protective and trustworthy, Colton; and I did suspect he and Jillian to share a past. Fortunately, Eason wraps everything up in a way that’s a small piece of fairy-tale charm. Still, I will say, in regards to the mystery, I’m not sure my curiosity is totally satisfied (more later on).

BOOK REVIEW | ‘Living Lies’: A Solid Romantic Suspense Novel

Reading through these 300-some pages, as is good in any suspense, who the real antagonist is conflicts us. It’s a finale that we don’t immediately expect because of all of the red herrings! When a Secret Kills is chocked full of revelations and intrigue. It has everything that this book should have and certainly lives up to my expectations.

Lost in the excitement and “chase,” I believe there is some lack of back-story work between our protagonists. There isn’t enough exploration of them as an “us” and that made me sorry. Nonetheless, in a suspense novel, we can easily overlook this. Equally is this point true of our desire to know more about all the secondary characters (like Grayson, Blake or Katie). Though, I cannot legitimately claim this as a “con” considering all this is, is a surefire sign of a talented writer.

In the end, this story is dynamite! From the wonderful plot to the characters (including a certain sassy pint-sized one), the entire book flows in a way my reading sensibilities crave. That’s not to say there isn’t some unexpected moments to keep us on our toes. It charms me one minute, and the next put me on edge, wanting to speed read just to find out what comes next! If this is any sign of what’s to come, I’m one fan who is most anxious to discover what Lynette has planned next.

  1. Can't wait to read this series, Rissi!! After I finish the review books I have, I'm going to take a break and catch up on the non-review books that I want to read. Which includes The Elite, which I bought yesterday!! :)

    1. Oh, hooray for The Elite! Mine is sitting on my bedside table tempting me. Sadly, I haven't gotten through much yet. :) Thus far, it's spectacular.

Hope you can read this series at some point – it's got cops in it. ;)

    1. That I do – it was fun to know we both were satisfied with the conclusion! It made me happy to finally read Colton and Jillian's story. :)
