Best of Team USA Olympics 2014

by

Olympic conversation led me to dig out some of my dusty old scrapbooks and remember who had competed in prior Olympics and which athletes were competing again this year, and yes, during one of the winter Olympics, my teenage self used a portion of my scrapbook to commemorate some of my favorite U.S. moments, so I decided, just for fun to share some of my best of team USA Olympic 2014 favorites so far!

Despite the media criticism, I’m happy for team USA and think all they did and are accomplishing is nothing to sneeze at. Have there been missed opportunities? Of course. But despite this, these athletes have also put in great performances and have had some wonderful, inspiring winning runs. And, really, most all of this certainly makes for some pretty exciting TV!

Instead of single out everything and writing about it, I just created a kind of single “scrapbook” page. So, my favorite (or a few of them) moments would they look something like the below graphic!

  1. I'm loving the figure skating – particularly the ice dancing. While I loved the team event, I'm really loving the individual competition. And yes I already know who took home the gold in the ice dancing because I asked my friend who was watching it live online earlier. :) I'm shamelessly admitting I ADORE spoilers. LOL.

And I've enjoyed the bobsled coverage. Still love the Jamaican bobsled team.

    1. Yes! Me, too, Dawn. The figure skating is lovely to watch – I used to be an avid watcher and fell away from the sport so it was fun to see who are "up and comers" today and to realize that Meryl and Charlie were still making a splash in ice dancing – they're gorgeous to watch. Right there with you, Dawn. I was stalking the Sochi page earlier today to "see" who won and even knowing I'm going to enjoy watching it "live" in prime time. :) Cannot wait to cheer on the ladies.

Glad you liked the bobsled too – I think I saw the Jamaican team run yesterday and they didn't do very well but on the upside, the American's were doing pretty good. :)

  2. Ice Dancing all the way! I've been avoiding the spoilers, but I can honestly say without bias that the American team is by far my favorite, although I also like the Canadians and the French.

    1. Good for you if you can avoid them, Hayden! I couldn't even if I wanted too (my Twitter lit up today) though it's a good think I didn't want to because, well, I will admit I was stalking the Sochi page earlier. ;) Now I cannot wait to watch the drama unfold tonight.

My favorite is Meryl and Charlie also though like you, I think the Canadians have a pretty style, too. Cannot place the French just now, but I probably enjoyed their dance; it's just a nice sport to watch.

    1. Same here, Rosie! I'm so glad they earned team bronze (which was a fun addiction) and am eager to watch the ice dancing tonight as well as the ladies later this week (fingers crossed that at least one of the three ladies can earn a medal); it'd be awesome since I don't think they're expected to do much against the Russian and other skaters.

I'm enjoying cheering on team USA also! They've got some fabulous athletes and some of their wins have been done in epic style. Love it! :)

  3. Definitely the luge (I think it was luge?) medalist who stopped training to be with her growing family, but then returned to the sport, making a deal that her family would travel with her to competitions. It was so sweet…when she won her medal she jumped into the stands to be with her husband and two toddler-aged kids. <3

    1. That WAS a precious moment, Maria – and I agree! Seeing Noelle win silver was wonderful. I thought her attitude was the epitome of what good sportsmanship is – she seemed so happy and thrilled just to be returning to the sport and I think even if she'd come in third, she would have been thrilled. So sweet. :)

  4. I'm glad you are enjoying the Olympics, Rissi!!
My family and I really enjoyed watching the super talented Charlie White and Meryl Davis. I am so glad they got a gold medal:)

I hope you have a great day in the Lord!!!

    1. Ella, hello!

Indeed I have been enjoying the team U.S wins and the Olympics. I'm not the most avid fan (for example, I probably won't watch tonight since there is nothing of great interest to me, plus I read spoilers ;D) but it's fun to cheer on the USA team and like you, my mom and I were tickled pink to watch Meryl and Charlie win gold last night. That was epic and beautiful – so happy for them. :)

      Same to you. :)

  5. We're totally Olympics crazy here in The Netherlands, Rissi, as our speedskaters continue to win medals! It's also fun at work, because I have a German, Polish and an Austrian colleague, so I also get to experience quite some excitement over the snow-sports as we cheer on their fellow country(wo)men.

Did you know by the way, that our Dutch gold medal winner of the 10 km speedskating today, Jorrit Bergsma, is engaged to 'your' American speedskater Heather Richardson? They're getting married this summer!

    1. It's been crazy how awesome those Netherland skaters have done in their sport, Birdie; I saw they again had a podium sweep today or yesterday – cannot remember which but I love the fun excitement they have with it. It's cool when there's a podium sweep, though it is rare. :)

Yes! I did hear that Bergsma and Richardson were engaged. :)

  6. Okay….so I LOVED ice dancing. How could you not like Meryl and Charlie?! But I did love the Canadian team as well! SO excited for the women's figure skating

Noelle Pikus Pace winning actually made me cry. Her story was SO touching! And who didn't love the USA sweep =D I find I am SO pro America during the Olympics and there is nothing like seeing your flag on all three podiums =)

    1. Same here, Ella. Tessa and Scott have a VERY pretty style and it's lovely to watch. I love the U.S. and Canada going 1 and 2 as that's what they did last Olympics only reversed. Seemed perfect. :) Me, too! I'm stalking the Twitter feeds now to find out the results and will probably watch the U.S. ladies tonight if nothing else.

Noelle's win was FANTASTIC. I so wanted her to get a medal not just because of her skill but she was the epitome of good sportsmanship – I loved her enthusiasm. It's all too rare to see those podium sweeps so when I read we'd done that, I was giddy. ;)

Here's to hoping for a few more epic wins in the final days! :)

  7. Awwww, I love this! I really enjoyed watching the Olympics this time, especially learning about some sports I'd never seen before–like skeleton? I had no idea what it was. Cool, though. My favorite part was definitely when Meryl and Charlie won, though. I spent the whole day avoiding the spoilers because I'd watched the short program on primetime and didn't want to spoil the results for myself. But I ended up watching the free skate in the newsroom of my university's paper with the entire copy desk, and when they won we all cheered. It was so fun. :) :) There's more, but that was definitely the best moment!

    1. Hi, Rachel! Glad you commented – and I had fun with this (thanks!) and in fact, am going to post one more blog as a "part 2" of the Olympic events that happened post this blog.

The thing I loved best about skeleton was Noelle's silver medal run – that was awesome. She was probably the best example of sportsmanship I saw at the Olympics and that makes me cheer her on all the more. Meryl and Charlie's record-breaking win was beautiful! (Avoiding spoilers IS hard.) I'm so happy for them and hope in four years our next ice dancing superstars will make another splash, plus even though they didn't medal, I was happy for the U.S. women's team – they did really well and if not Ashley (just because I don't know if she plans on coming back), I hope Gracie and Polina are perfect in four years. They have the talent, it just needs to be polished now. :)

I'm not the most avid Olympic fan (like near the end, I didn't watch much) but I love to cheer on team USA and enjoy their wins with them. :)
