An Uncertain Choice: Introducing Sir. Collin

by

In Jody Hedlund’s debut YA novel (with a new publisher, Zondervan), its heroine, Lady Rosemarie faces life-altering decisions. The first of which is whom she should marry. This is important because the union can break an ancient vow; if she marries by the eve of her 18th birthday. Lucky her, she has not one but three noble gentleman looking to win her heart. One of my favorites is the singing and always cheerful Sir. Collin, so let’s set about meeting him, shall we?

INTRODUCING SIR. COLIN FROM AN UNCERTAIN CHOICE

Physical Appearance: Though he’s not handsome in the striking way his companions are (his two best friends), Sir. Collin is good-looking with golden blonde hair that gleams “in the summer sun.” He has “sparkling” green eyes and a handsome, ready smile.

Personality Characteristics: Always ready with a joke or a dazzling smile, Sir. Collin is the epitome of a personality that doesn’t take much of anything seriously. He likes to have fun and make other’s life full of laughter, and he’s particularly kind to Lady Rosemarie which makes him easy for Rosemarie to talk with. He showers her with gifts and spares no expense when it comes to romancing her.

Strengths: He’s fiercely loyal to his benefactor, the Duke and his two friends willing to follow them anywhere. He uses the skills he’s learned as a knight to protect them all, whether that’s in a fight to survive or merely in keeping everyone’s spirits upbeat. Sir. Collin also relishes the chance to compete (affable) to win Rosemarie’s heart and he never once shirks in his quest to do just that in what he believes is the way to her heart.

Weakness: Though he’s the jovial type who ensures everyone’s spirits are buoyed, it’s also his strength that can be a weakness for
Sir. Collin. He tends to use those same qualities as a means of hiding behind dealing with serious, in-the-moment issues. He doesn’t have the compassion for the poor as others do and grows bored with the idea of walking among them, handing out provisions. In their early courting days, he romances Rosemarie instead of getting to know her beyond her beauty. He dazzles her with
the kind of gifts he associates her with: beauty.

THE BOOK: Due to her parents’ promise at her birth, Lady Rosemarie has been prepared to become a nun on the day she turns eighteen. Then, shortly before her birthday, a friend of her father’s enters the kingdom and proclaims her parents’ will left a second choice—if Rosemarie can marry before the eve of her eighteenth year, she will be exempt from the ancient vow.

Before long, Rosemarie is presented with the three most handsome and brave knights in the land. But when the knights’ arrival results in a series of attacks within her land, she begins to wonder if the convent is the best place after all. If only one of the knights—the one who appears the most guilty—had not already captured her heart. – Jody Hedlund

REVIEWS

THE VOW: I must applaud Jody for her crafting of this series. This The Vow book isn’t anything that I [expect] yet it was so much better. I liked the ease with which the story reads. A lot of medieval fiction or films can be boring, and this was anything but. Condensed into a few pages is the beginning of an epic, memorable adventure and Rosemarie has the promise to be the heroine the story needs. Continue Reading →

AN UNCERTAIN CHOICE: Aside from the atmosphere and breath-catching sword fights, this is a perfect easy read for anyone wanting a period read. It sets up what I am sure will be a rewarding series and of course ends with a new threat that might throw Rosemarie into more danger or at the very least mean she’ll have to rise to the occasion of becoming an even better ruler. 1. I am currently reading Healer of Carthage by Lynne Gentry and love it! I am so looking forward to Jody Hedlund's new book!

    1. Oh, I admire you, Kara. I've never tried reading a Dickens novels. His movies are confusing enough as it is. ;) I've seen two or three adaptations of Dickens Great Expectations and think I'd recommend the two most recent versions, which I believe are both on DVD now. :)

    1. I agree, Jamie! I had to page through the book while putting this together (just to refresh my memory) and felt like a re-read was in order too. Especially since I didn't have the print copy in the first place. :)

  2. I love how he's not traditionally good looking! It makes it different!!

I have a US address but rafflecopter might show my location outside US because I’m doing a semester abroad

thank you so very much :)

    1. Me too, Christina! Collin is one of my favorites! Hopefully he'll get more page time in a future book. :)

No problem! I will totally make note of that should your name be the randomly picked winner. :)

  3. I am currently reading Prague Counterpoint (book 2) in the Zion Covenant by Bodie Thoene. I can't wait to read AN UNCERTAIN CHOICE. :)

  4. This is one book that I cannot wait to read & the cover for it is stunning!! I am currently reading some books on music and various classics, most notably Bleak House by Charles Dickens and Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne. Thank you for the lovely giveaway.. ~ Blessings, Juli emeraldelena@hotmail.com

    1. Ooh, good for you reading, Dickens. I stick with the film adaptations. :D

Best of luck, Julianna – and I hope you enjoy An Uncertain Choice.

    1. I'm glad! Thank you for saying so, Irene. That was my intent, but sometimes when you stare at something for too long and rework it, things get sketchy in the writing/blogging process. :)

  5. Dauntless by Dina Sleiman is next on my "to read" list (after midterms)! I love that we're getting so much more Medieval YA in Christian fiction now! Thanks for the chance to win. =)

  6. Sounds like Collin is a pretty awesome hero! Can't wait to meet him!
I am currently about halfway through From the Start by Melissa Tagg and it is amazing!

  7. What a fantastic post, Rissi – you always put an amazing effort into your posts and they look great. Thanks for introducing Collin – I enjoyed creating his character a lot.

I'm in the middle of edits at the moment so haven't had time for much reading but I'm loving seeing all the books everyone is enjoying.

    Have a lovely day, friends.

    1. Hi, Jody! Thank you so very much for stopping by. It's always lovely to chat with authors about their characters and/or books. I really liked Collin. He was such an awesome character. Hope we get to see more of him…? :)

Best of luck with those edits! Cannot wait to see what else you have planned. :)

  8. Ah! This one is such a lovely story! I thoroughly devoured it the night I first read it. (Why yes. I might have reread it a time or two since then. ;) All the knights are delightful. I do admit that I had certain feelings for Derrick, just like Rosemarie. But Collin is awesome too! How fun to know a bit more about him now. (Also, did that end mean that we're getting more books set in this timeline? I sure hope so!!)

    1. It was indeed, Kara! I really loved this book and in fact, was more delighted by it than I dreamed I would be. Good for you! I'd like to reread it as well; me e-ARC was way too messy (the format), so I'm really glad to have a paperback now. I know what you mean, Derrick is awesome. :)

…I haven't seen yet if there's more to this story, but with an ending like that, there HAS to be, right!? (It's listed as a series on GR, which is promising!)

    1. I do too, Maxie! He is VERY handsome – and his personality is always fun.

Yay! I did too, but then, Lydia always does a spectacular job with her blog. :)

  9. Such a fun character introduction, Rissi! Makes me all the more excited to "meet" him. I really, really want to get my hands on this book, but I promised myself no more requesting review copies/buying books until I finished the ones I already have on my shelf. I really don't know how long I will last, though…:( Haha, thanks for this awesome giveaway!

    1. You made yourself an excellent promise, Bekah! I have been doing better with requesting right now as well. It's a good policy to have and one that teaches us some restraint with bookish things! I still buy them though… that "preorder" button allure gets me every time. ;)

Good luck with your book-buying/requesting ban. Stay strong. :)
