Portrait of Love – Jason Dohring Stars in a Colorful Hallmark Romance!

by

In case you cannot tell from the image (which I know, does obscure the couple – but the scene it depicts is too cute), Veronica Mars fans, you are going to want to park yourself in front of the TV for Portrait of Love. Below I share why this is so.

Portrait of Love (2015) Hallmark TV Review

Small town girl turned big-city photographer April Littleton (Bree Williamson) is about to have a trip down memory lane. Bored of photographing women modeling clothes the average woman is never going to buy, she feels restless and ready to try something new. When her best friend asks her to return home to participate in a local art auction, April’s skepticism quickly warms to the idea.

Once home, she is reunited with her former flame, Luke Dwyer (Jason Dohring). Since she left, Jason has given up art altogether – his sculpture (for the same art auction April is home for) isn’t even started – after all, they were always better together than apart. Or that’s what everyone but April seems to see. With the help of Luke’s precocious daughter, Jess (Caitlin Carmichael) their shared passion for art, the pair may just rediscover their spark.

First things first, let’s get the fan-girling out of the way… because oh, my gosh! There is cause for some of that. Guys, Logan from Veronica Mars stars in this. As someone who hasn’t seen Jason in much of anything (beyond the role of ultimate bad boy Logan Echolls and once in a creepy good guest-starring role of Lie to Me), first I saw Jason was set to star in a Hallmark movie, I knew it was one I’d have to watch. As it turns out, not only was it fun to see him in a role so unlike Logan (he sheds the whole bad-boy persona), it was actually a really sweet film.

Portrait of Love

There was a great story to this one and the characterization was really quite good. Because the couple knew each other, the 90 minute runtime doesn’t affect the credibility of the couple falling in love and the evolution of their renewed relationship was smarty written. Instead of the usual pick-up-where-we-left-off, this relationship has more tension and I really liked that. It shows there is a gap between this and the normal TV romance and the contrast was really nice. I liked the entire cast and particularly enjoyed the scenes with Jess and the adults. She adds some sparkle to the movie with her vibrant personality by creating some cute sass in the scenes she’s in.

If you like Hallmark movies, it’s nearly a given you’ll enjoy this one. It’s cute and snappy, and the girl-reunites-with-boy plot is too darn cute for its own good. In my opinion though it’s cliché, and a familiar idea, this script gives it vibrancy with some new brushstrokes and angles, and of course, the characters bring their own sense of style to the production.

  1. I enjoyed this film –I don't know if the final piece they created was gallery-worthy, but for their town it was perfect and meaningful … I took a sculpture class last year, so it was fun seeing the techniques all the different artists were using. =P

I admit I was kind of annoyed with Jess for some reason … she was just … too … talkative? I know some kids who are like that in real life, but she rubbed me the wrong way for some reason. Nothing against the actress or anything –I think it was more her script … *shrug* Great review!

    1. Aw, that's fun! I have no art experience, so I thought it looked neat. :)

Nothing wrong with that! I have "met" characters who annoy me like that too. It's just the way things are sometimes. :) Thank YOU for reading.

  2. Jess was SO adorable! I really did enjoy this one. I mean, it had Jason Dohring in it, so that was excuse enough, right?! I loved seeing him play a sweet single father. He and Jess' relationship…..no words for the cuteness! :) Plus the romance was fun. The tension and chemistry fairly crackled, which made for lots of *happy sigh*-ing on my part. :D

    1. Great thoughts, Kara! I agree with everything you say. Seeing Jason in a role vastly different than Logan was fabulous (he was great!). And yes, the romance was one of my favorites in this genre; it just "worked." Crossing my fingers this one comes to DVD because I tell ya', I'd add it to my Hallmark collection. :)
