Discovering blogging friends are living their dreams through publishing is one of the most exciting things the book blogging community can be a part of. I’ve “known” at least three bloggers who are pursing that exact dream, and have been able to play a small part in helping two of them launch their novels in the world. One of those talented souls is Rachelle Rea. Her debut, The Sound of Diamonds is now officially out in the world and today, I’d like to talk about that novel.

STORY: Young Gwyn is a Catholic girl who hides herself away at a convent in order to forget the tragedy in her young life – and to hide away from him. Dirk knows he’s the man Gwyn believes responsible for the death of her parents. Because of this, she isn’t willing to walk out the door with him when he shows up concerned for her safety, asking her to travel with him and his companions to England. Thus sets into motion a literal and emotional journey of healing, danger and forgiveness.

The Sound of Diamonds, by Rachelle Rea | Book Review

Stories that take place in the 1500’s through the 1700’s aren’t always my thing. Despite this, I had every confidence in this book because I know what a talented writer Rachelle is.  Turns out my inklings for this novel were spot on. This novel was perfection. I loved every moment of the plot and characters. Rachelle has masterfully created a fascinating world (in terms of the character’s and the backstory’s) that is as sweet as it is emotionally fulfilling. The message and conversions contained in these pages will make you invest one-hundred percent in these characters lives. I love the journey they take and amore than once the questions the book poses will impress.

Perhaps what impresses most is Rea’s prose. Her beautiful voice is on hand at nearly every page and I appreciated how focused on the characters this story is. The mystique of Dirk’s past (especially given Gwyn’s perception of him) and Gwyn’s charming persona (I loved the minor character detail of giving her eyeglasses) was some of the best tug-and-pull character interactions I’ve read in a while. This leads to some exquisite romance that was above reproach. The language was so well-expressed that I marked up my Kindle copy in multiple places and look forward to my paperback copy arriving in my mailbox.

The easy flowing style, shortened length (both aspects I appreciated) and the expressions of love are evident in so much of this debut. Rachelle Rea has gifted her readers with an expressive, heartfelt journey that’s not to be missed. I sincerely and genuinely enjoyed it – perhaps more than I realized I would. If you like historical fiction, pick up The Sound of Diamonds. Any avid fans of Jody Hedlund’s, An Uncertain Choice, will want to add this book to your shelf with haste. It’s a dazzling debut of a read that promises more of the same in the sequel.

    1. Thank YOU for letting me review this, Rachelle. This book is genuinely one of THE best historical novels I've read. Cannot wait for my Amazon copy to arrive in my mailbox so I can have the pretty. :) :) :) Gwyn and Dirk are amazing.

  1. {spoiler comment alert!}

    I just finished my copy earlier this morning. It was delightful, and filled with sizzling page turning adventure. I must say the overboard scene was probably my favorite as I did not see it coming. I also love that Cade so willingly went to their aid…true friendship.

    1. I'm glad you liked this one as well, Heather. I though Rachelle did an amazing job with everything. The "adventure" was well balanced against the spirituality story and of course, there was ROMANCE! I didn't really make mention of it, but the friendship was wonderful, yes. Here's to whatever comes next in book two… I suspect it'll be equally great.
