Cover Love | Edition the First

Hello, happy readers and fellow book nerds. Today, I randomly decided to put together a little "Cover Love" post in which I share some random (newish) book covers I've spotted. Because I'm not as "with it" as I once was when it comes to putting these posts together, you've likely seen all of these or have already added them to your Goodreads shelves, but if you haven't, and you're interested in adding some of these and/or talking about their place on your TBRs (i.e., if you're interested in reading it), feel free to comment down below. I'd love to chat them up with you.

Mostly, the books below are from the YA market, but there are a few inspirational fiction titles thrown in because a.) they're gorgeous and b.) I'm a fan of the authors! Because of this, I wanted to give said authors and their respective books a shoutout. Just because.

Without further ado, let's look at these cover lovelies.

THE ILLUSIONIST'S APPRENTICE by Kristy Cambron

Boston, 1926. Jenny “Wren” Lockhart is a bold eccentric– even for a female vaudevillian.

As notorious for her inherited wealth and gentleman’s dress as she is for her unsavory upbringing in the back halls of a vaudeville theater, Wren lives in a world that challenges all manner of conventions. Her job is to bring the art of illusion to life under the spotlight of a stage, and she’s infamous for her ability to harness that talent. But it’s the deeply private life she leads behind the scenes that few see– or the apprenticeship to the world’s greatest illusionist, Harry Houdini– that few would ever guess she’s known.

In the months following the famed escape-artist’s death, Wren is drawn into a web of mystery surrounding a spiritualist by the name of Horace Stapleton– a man defamed by Houdini’s ardent debunking of fraudulent mystics in the years leading up to his death. But in a public illusion that goes terribly wrong, one man is dead–and another stands charged with his murder. Though he’s known as one of her teacher’s greatest critics, Wren must decide to become the one thing she never wanted to be: Stapleton’s defender.

Forced to team up with Boston bureau agent Elliot Matthews to find the truth behind the deepest secrets of one famous illusionist, Wren must race against time and an unknown enemy, all to prove the innocence of a hated man. In a world of illusion, of the vaudeville halls that showcase the flamboyant and the strange, Wren’s carefully constructed world threatens to collapse around her. She must face a life-altering decision head-on: will she place her faith in the reality of what the eye can see or will she pursue a calling to find faith in the only one who can claim true victory over the grave? Layered with mystery, illusion and the artistry of the Jazz Age’s bygone vaudeville era, The Illusionist’s Apprentice is a journey through love and loss, and the underpinnings of faith on each life’s stage. - Goodreads, March 2017

FATE OF FLAMES by Sarah Raughley

Four girls with the power to control the elements and save the world from a terrible evil must come together in the first epic novel in a brand-new series.

When Phantoms—massive beasts made from nightmares and darkness—suddenly appeared and began terrorizing the world, four girls, the Effigies, each gained a unique power to control one of the classical elements: earth, air, fire, and water. Since then, four girls across the world have continually fought against the Phantoms, fulfilling their cosmic duty. And when one Effigy dies, another girl gains her power as a replacement.

But now, with technologies in place to protect the world’s major cities from Phantom attacks, the Effigies have stopped defending humanity and, instead, have become international celebrities, with their heroic feats ranked, televised, and talked about in online fandoms.

Until the day that New York City’s protection against the Phantoms fails, a man seems to be able to control them by sheer force of will, and Maia, a high school student, unexpectedly becomes the Fire Effigy.

Now Maia has been thrown into battle with three girls who want nothing to do with one another. But with the first human villain that the girls have ever faced, and an army of Phantoms preparing for attack, there isn’t much time for the Effigies to learn how to work together.

Can the girls take control of their destinies before the world is destroyed forever? - Goodreads, November 2016
