The Legend of Tarzan (2016): Unabashedly Romantic and Beautiful Period Drama Adventure

by

When the promotional material (trailer and poster) first appeared for this film, I was not (at all) interested in seeing The Legend of Tarzan. Sure I assumed I eventually would because, after all, it is a period drama, but there was nothing about the idea of this film that appealed to me. Perhaps my mind was too firmly affixed on the cheesy animated film or more likely, I “worried” over the balance between Tarzan’s lives (that as a wild man and gentleman).

A snippet of my official review and link to read it in full is down below. My conclusions might surprise you.

The Legend of Tarzan (2016) Review

If there is one thing the Box Office likes more than sequels, it’s a retelling. Re-imagining a legend or fable seems one of Hollywood’s greatest hobbies. This 2016 film follows in these footsteps by looking past a pure origin story to introduce us to their version of the legend that is Tarzan. Continue Reading on Silver Petticoat →

He is no normal man. He was thought to be an evil spirit, a
ghost in the trees. They speak of his power over the animals in the jungle. No
man ever started with less.

Is this a film that left you with so-so first impressions? Did you see it, like it or detest it? Comment down below with your thoughts. I’d love to chat with you about The Legend of Tarzan.

Content Note: There is one scene of sensuality (close up shots of lovers) and some violent deaths (usually out of camera frame). There is an instance of crude humor. The film is PG-13.

  1. I was wary when I first saw the trailer, and I'm still not sure if I'll watch it, but I've always liked the Tarzan story (like you, though, I've only seen the Disney animated version), and I was curious about your thoughts. Thanks for the great review, and all the other detailed, thoughtful reviews you do! ♥

    1. Hi, Korin! Thank you for being a reader. I so appreciate that, and sincerely mean it when I say, it's because of readers like you that this blog has been the success it has and is a BIG reason why I keep this all up. :)

If you do see this, I hope you enjoy it. I was SUPER skeptical because it seemed liked it might be "silly" in comparison to the normal period dramas I adore, but this one pleasantly surprised me. I was thrilled I took the time to watch it, and happily, I don't regret buying a copy. :) Let me know if you like it if you decide to see it.

  2. I had pretty much written off this one, but I must say your review put a little spark of interest back. Maybe I'll have to check it out after all with some revised expectations. :) Great review!

    1. Hi, Sarah! Thanks. I had that exact reaction. If you do see it, I sure hope it surpasses your expectations – I know how disappointing it can be to see something that let's you down. Let me know what you think! :)

    1. Thank you for the comment, Kara. :) This is a beautiful period drama, but of course, as with everything, it won't suit everyone, and there's nothing wrong with that. Hope you enjoy if you do see it. :)

  3. I plan on watching this one, but haven't yet. I bought The Jungle Book without watching it first and then realized that it was much more violent than I was expecting and wasn't something we'd really re-watch a lot with the kids – just different than I was expecting, so I've been holding off on this one. I'll have to watch it soon though. After the new Star Trek. :)

    1. Bummer! I've not seen The Jungle Book but as it's not my favorite Disney film, I'll probably just rent this one. I'm SO glad I "blind bought" this one though. One of my 2016 favorites. :) Let me know what you think if/when you see this one.

ALSO, the new Star Trek is on my agenda too. Right now I'm caught up in The Crown, so it'll have to wait. :)
