‘Dirty Dancing’ (2017): Entertaining, Flawed and Completely Lovely, ABC’s New Romance

No matter whose name backs them or which company produces them, the musical remakes televised on TV cannot escape censure. Controversy follows and surrounds them, Twitter fights inspired by their nearing premiere break out (really???), and viewers seem afraid to engage in conversation about them. dirty dancing (2017)

Nobody puts Baby in a corner. – Dirty Dancing

Meanwhile, I sit back and ask, “Um why??” My logic being that none of these are worth getting upset over or biting back with unkind comments. So with that said, I’ll put this out there, simply and bluntly: I really enjoyed ABC’s recent “remake” of the classic dance film, Dirty Dancing.

Does it achieve perfection? Goodness, no! But that’s not the point. The point is, I wasn’t looking to this to replace or improve on its predecessor (a “classic” film I do actually like – not all make it on my personal favorites list, but I did like this one). All I anticipated was to sit down and enjoy “dancing” though a summer romance. This is exactly what the remake of Dirty Dancing does.

To its credit, this script also makes us think, balances the themes of its time and pushes itself beyond the overt them of “young love.” It’s about fathers and daughters; the bonds of sisters, and finding yourself (when your “childhood” ends and that voice in your head – and EVERYONE YOU EVER TALK TO, asks, “What’s next?”) in a world that often confuses. The heartbreaking story, emotions and (mostly) memorable acting helps make this so much more than what the reviews would have you believe. ♥

(Full disclosure, prior to writing my review, I did not read any reviews, I’d just heard whispers of the tear down.)

Today I review Dirty Dancing with Silver Petticoat. If you’d like to read my review, head over there to check it out.

Dirty Dancing (2017) Review

A mixed bag of reviews tends to surround the televised remakes of musical and dance classics. NBC and Fox have made a mark with remakes of The Sound of Music and Grease, respectively. ABC joined the phenomenon by touching a film many consider the quintessential “dance classic,” Dirty Dancing. Continue reading on Silver Petticoat Review →

  1. I read your review and it was great! I'm so glad that I'm not the only person that enjoyed this remake. I wrote my review last night and what I found is that this interpretation had so much more depth and emotion. And let's be honest the original (even as wonderful as it was) is not exactly high brow art.

    1. I really enjoyed this one, Ivy. Is it flawed? Sure. But it has lots of good qualities too, and I loved that. Now I've seen this, I need to watch the original again, but off the top of my head, I'd 100% agree. As good as it is, the original is not perfect or "classic" in the same sense as Sound of Music.

That said, I also agree that this one felt really "real" and I liked that it is messy. :)

PS: looking forward to reading your review – and thanks for reading mine! :)

  2. Have to admit that I avoided watching the remake as I'm usually disappointed. However, I sorta regret not watching this one after seeing a few clips online. Glad to hear that you enjoyed it!

    1. Nothing wrong with that. It's good we know what we like and don't. If you ever do see this one, I hope you enjoy! I think you can watch it on ABC.com or rent through Amazon or iTunes. :)

  3. I didn't enjoy it. I really LOATHED the ending. That being said if others enjoy this film then that's great. To each their own. No need to spoil it for those that do love it. ^_^

    1. So true, Lila – there's nothing wrong with some of us enjoying this and other's not. :) We all take something different away from certain things and that's part of the greatness of the varied entertainment choices. Glad you stopped by!
