Month in Review | August 2017 + #Booktube Talk

And just as quickly as it arrived, the eigth month of 2017? Check it off the list. Put it “in the books.” Wipe it from the slate, as it’s gone and over with. Farewell, August. Bonjour, September!

Another month’s end means another “month in review” here on Finding Wonderland. Here we go.
»Favorites from August 2017«

1. Blog Talk and Updates | Lately, I've been really wanting to clean up and out my blog. This means the following.

A. Go back and clean up reviews (editing, reformatting pictures, adding content sections, etc.)
B. Update the archive pages (review pages, etc.)
C. Clear up the archives

My question to you all is this: How do you clean up your blogs? I've been deleting posts that are old Waiting on Wednesday, Top Ten Tuesday posts and old giveaway posts, etc. The latter especially is no longer relevant, so it seems unnecessary to keep them around. What are your thoughts on the subject??

Though I talked about this last month, I thought I'd again mention the following.  I updated the theme and do like it, but there were adapting challenges. This is why (if you noticed) there were so many “crazy” days in which this space was having the equivalent of a bad hair day. If the theme is giving you any fits or it’s not working when you visit, please let me know here or on my Dear Readers post. I can always swap out to the oldie theme.

2. Booktube | I *think* I'm finally finding a rhythm with Booktube. This means, new videos. Hopefully. *fingers crossed*

3. Facebook Pages | (Mentioning again) On that same wave length, Finding Wonderland and Baubles, Beads and Stuff both picked up Facebook pages this month. Not sure it’s something I’ll keep active or if I even like, need or want Facebook pages for these outlets. But for now, they’re there.

4. Mark Ballas | He's baaack! Mark returns for Dancing with the Stars 25th season and I'm so excited. Cannot wait to learn who his partner is, and see the creativity that is his choreography.

5. All things Pumpkin | Had my first pumpkin flavored [fill in the blank] of the fall season with a pumpkin bagel. Though sadly, it wasn't very pumpkin-y. What's your favorite pumpkin treat?

6. Taylor Swift | Yes, I'm crazy excited to see this artist release new music. Yes, I'm still a fangirl.

» Bookstagram Challenge «

Tressa and I are (again) hosting another #WishfulWonder Bookstagram challenge. The fun begins September 1! All the details can be found in the introduction post.

 »Favorite Blog Posts«
 (Blog posts that, while not necessarily the most popular, were fun to write;
this month's content has been - #SorryNotSorry - populated with Hallmark.
I'm 100% ok with this.)

1. Fangirl Confessions | Taylor Swift and #TS6IsComing | Yes, I'm still a TSwift fangirl. Right or wrong, I am. I gush about her 'Reputationannouncement in this blog post.

2. Lucky in Love by Kasie West – A Golden YALit RomCom Sure to ‘Win’ the Heart of its Reader | This book... aww! It's #ALLTHEFEELS!

3. Moving Target by Lynette Eason – Fast Paced Romantic Suspense at its Best | Gotta' love a suspense novel by the talented Eason.

4. On My Bookshelf | Anticipating August | Just for fun, I picked out a few books I was excited about for August (releasing and recent books I read). Look for a September edition coming soon.

5. Summer Villa (2016) – Miscommunication and Scheduling Leads to Happy Coincidences (and Endings) | Because I love a cute Hallmark RomCom; finally saw this one from last summer.

» Monthly Popular Posts | August 2017 «

1. Can't Wait / Waiting on Wednesday | Eighth Edition | Happy book birthday to this one – Chasing Secrets by Lynette Eason. It’s scheduled to show up on my doorstep today, and I cannot wait.

2. Top Ten Tuesday | Color Your Bookshelf! (aka More Random Books From My Shelf) | A Top Ten Tuesday from March? Huh. My monthly stats are (AGAIN!) interesting this month.

3. My Christmas Love (2016) – A Festive Romance Inspired by Lyrics | The Christmas-y mood carries over to August.

4. Top Ten Tuesday | Books that are Temping my Amazon Cart aka Window Shopping | A random Top Ten Tuesday post that was way too much fun to put together.

5. Book Giveaways | YALit Books + Swag (CLOSED)

*My popular monthly posts are basically the same (boring) except they've shuffled around their order of popularity.

»Around the Interwebs«

Silver Petticoat:  Here’s a recap look at what I contributed to the amazing webzine, Silver Petticoat. We're on hiatus right now, and like our editors are, I'm enjoying the break. But, after the holiday, I have to up my writer game to have some new articles drafted and ready for publication when we return in September. (Watch for lots of fun new material.)

Articles and Lists | I featured the prettiness that is This Beautiful Fantastic with a Romantic Moment of the Week between Bella and Billy (*swoon*). Early this month, I preview Hallmark's Summer Nights

Film and TV Reviews | I reviewed the underrated, QUALITY drama, My Mother and Other Strangers (so good in my opinion); keeping within the same era, I review The Zookeeper's Wife, an emotional biopic set during WWII; in honor of its 30th anniversary, I talk about Dirty Dancing (1987) including its flaws and strengths; finally, I review the adorable (loved this one) Love at the Shore, which is Hallmark's first Summer Nights original of 2017.

TV Recaps | No recaps.

We all had a great month at Silver Petticoat, and as always, I give a shout-out to our editors and fellow contributors. If I do say so, my fellow writer's are putting out so much amazing content. It's a pleasure to be a small part of this talented group.

  2. So... what do you mean by "clean up your blog," pray tell? To me, it means looking at all the sidebar stuff and deciding if I can just pitch some of that to make the sidebars less massive. Sometimes I go through my tags list and delete tags that only have one entry, as clearly it's not something I'm writing a lot about. But it sounds like you're talking about deleting posts and so on. Why would you do that? Really curious about your reasoning, as deleting old posts has never occurred to me.

    1. Deleting tags is part of the clean up process, Rachel. Like you, I notice I have some that have been used only 1-3 times; these I delete because it seems unnecessary. :)

RE: old posts. So far, I've mostly deleted old Top Ten Tuesday posts, giveaway posts, etc. When I first started blogging, I didn't take much of anything very seriously, but since it's become a hobby AND something I take seriously (i.e., using it as a platform to change my writing, working to improve my design hobby or as a "professional" outlet), I don't feel a "need" to keep old posts from 2013, etc. Some of my old meme posts seem unnecessary (plus they're cringe worthy ;D) to keep in the archives and there's no sense in bringing readers in with an old giveaway post.

I also read (don't know if it's true or not) that it can slow down the loading of your blog to keep an "archive" of so many posts.

Beyond this, I'm working on re-editing old reviews, updating photos (i.e., size, the name/titles of photos is important if you look at stats or readers finding a post, etc.) and am generally trying to improve the blog's look. :)
