Fangirl Confessions: Previewing Fall 2017 TV

by

Since one of my other obsessions (aka a pursuit I spend too much time invested in), that’s not books, is TV shows, taking a peek at the new TV shows is something of a Finding Wonderland tradition.

Every autumn is TV’s biggest stage. During the return of this season, each year, networks roll out their new premieres (in the hope they’ll have the next big hit) and set return dates for the shows that earned renewal at the end of the season (spring).

This year, dramas that sound really “strong” represent. This doesn’t bother me in the least depending on what writers do with the material, but if the masses have anything to say, there’s a sense of outrage over the “male dominated” line up for CBS. I’ll share a little secret, I don’t care. Why? Let me count up the reasons.

  1. these shows sound freaking good
  2. CBS’ track record is ah-ma-zing, and is home to many of my favorite shows (in other words, they know how to build successes. I admire this)
  3. depending on the writing (I reserve the right to change my opinion once I actually watch some of them), I’m so glad to see something like the military being spotlighted (SUPERFICIAL FANGIRL ALERT)
  4. I love many of the actors starring in these new shows

So with my little “rant” or fangirl ramblings, I’m not sure which, out of the way, let’s go ahead and “preview” some of the shows about to invade those DVRs and TV listings.

Previewing Fall 2017 TV

1: The Brave (NBC) | Premieres September 25

The first in the “military” theme shows (of this fall) to premiere, this one sounds incredibly good with more of a “thriller” focus. Nonetheless, I suspect if it lasts, its characters will get their due.

2: The Good Doctor (ABC) | Premieres September 25

It was the cast that first made me pause to take a closer look at this medical drama about a genius doctor. Following that up were the promotional spots which tempt me during Dancing with the Stars.

3: SEAL Team (CBS) | Premieres September 27

Agent Seeley Booth aka David Boreanaz stars in this new CBS drama that again turns the spotlight on the military (and an elite SEAL team). Of course I’m going to take an interest in this one.

This one chronicles the professional and personal lives of, of course, a SEAL team.

4: Inhumans (ABC) | Premieres September 29

Though I don’t see myself tuning into this immediately, it’s Marvel, so obviously I’ll check it out. Someday. Soonish.

5: Ten Days in the Valley (ABC) | Premieres October 1

Ever since seeing her in TNT’s The Closer, I’ve wondered at the possibility of seeing Kyra Sedgewick on TV again. Of course, in my “best scenario” it was always her return to the role of Brenda Leigh, but a new TV show will do too.

6: Wisdom of the Crowd (CBS) | Premieres October 1

In the aftermath of his daughter’s death, a tech giant creates “crowd sourced” hub to aid in solving his daughter’s murder – and presumably others. This one, to me, sounds a bit like the same driving principle as APB.

7: 9JKL (CBS) | Premieres October 2

Sitcom-esque comedies like this aren’t my thing. Sure, I thought the pilot of American Housewife and Speechless were hilarious, but I didn’t keep up with them. I just didn’t have the attachment to them that I do
other genres (although I did watch Imaginary Mary). That said, Mark is fresh off Royal Pains and as a fan, this one might be worth giving a second look.

8: The Gifted (Fox) | Premieres October 2

Another superhero themed show about a family who discover they possess superpowers. Amy Acker (Person of Interest) headlines this drama.

9: The Halcyon (Ovation) | Premieres October 2

Fortunately, I’ve already seen this beauty of a series (thanks to a UK set), but I’m beyond thrilled to see it finally air for US audiences. Just as a fair warning, it does end on something of a cliffhanger without promise of a second season. That said, the costumes, the jazz, the dancing, the romance, the era… all this and then some, plus a little viewer imagination (I know how I’d write that epilogue) makes it worth the experience.

10: Valor (The CW) | Premieres October 9

Now we come to the third military themed drama on our preview list. Don’t mistake me, I’m not complaining only apprehensive over the depiction the writer’s may use for a group of men and women I respect and am beyond grateful for. This story focuses on helicopter pilots.

11: Dynasty (The CW) | Premieres October 11

No list is complete without at least one “soapy drama,” and CW’s attempt to remake Dynasty fits. A while back, you’ll remember TNT tried to reboot Dallas and it wasn’t the success they hoped for. I see something similar with Dynasty, but who knows. Perhaps this will fill the Gossip Girl hole and be that “guilty pleasure” dramedy.

12: S.W.A.T. (CBS) | Premieres November 2

Since Shemar Moore (Criminal Minds) leads the cast for this one, of course I’ll be giving this one a try. I love the “look” of it and the premise, plus if my memory isn’t fooling me, the film this show is inspired by, is something I really enjoyed.

The premise revolves around Moore’s character as a newly prompted LA sergeant who is given responsibility for a new task force.

13: Alias Grace (Netflix) | Debuts November 3

In all likelihood this is another show I won’t rush to watch. There’s simply too many others vying for attention. Since it’s a period drama based on a novel by Margaret Atwood I did want to mention it.

14: Runaways (Hulu) | Debuts November 21

More superhero awesome? All that’s left to say is: Where do I sign up?

This one is another Marvel-backed series created for Hulu about a group of superheroes dubbed “Runaways.”

RETURNING TV | Arrow; The Blacklist; Blindspot; Bull; Chicago Fire; Chicago Med; Chicago P.D.; Designated Survivor; Elementary; Hawaii Five-O; Jane the Virgin; Lethal Weapon; MacGyver; NCIS; NCIS: Los Angeles; NCIS: New Orleans; Poldark; Shades of Blue; Scorpion; Supergirl; plus many more!

Which of these are you most anticipating? Are there any I didn’t include that have caught your eye? Will you be checking out all of the new fall drama or sticking to your favorites? What are your favorite TV addictions?? Comment down below! I’d love to chat with you about all things TV obsessions.

Thank you for visiting! Come back soon.

  1. Though I'm not all that excited about the selection we have to choose from when it comes to new shows this season, The Brave and The Gifted are definitely exceptions. I do love that there is such a strong focus on the military however; speaking of, have you heard of a little Netflix show by the name of Shooter?

Out of the returning shows, Supergirl, Outlander, Bull, and Lethal Weapon are at the top of my list to dive back into. DWTS is also shaping up to be a cracker of a 25th Season; are there any particular celebs you're rooting for already?

    1. Nothing wrong with that, Eleanor. Did you see The Brave? I watched the pilot and REALLY liked it. In fact, this reminds me, I need to write a quick review/early thoughts post. Hopefully in the next week that'll go live. I haven't seen The Gifted yet, but it's on my must-see list.

I have heart of Shooter! I have the S1 pilot in my iTunes library yet still it remains un-watched. Is it good?

I'm thrilled Bull is returning (love seeing Michael still on TV) and I only recently started Lethal Weapon (S1). The crazy "fun" of it really surprises me (though of course, it has deeper emotional scars) and I love that – I miss "happy" shows. So many go down these dark tunnels and never recapture those early season's joy (something I suspect 'Weapon' will follow). *sigh* I'm so behind on my superhero shows… but I still read all the spoilers and look forward to someday being all caught up.

DWTS IS shaping up to be a firecracker season – and I love it! Since I like Mark so well as a pro, I confess I'm 100% rooting for he and Lindsey (I really wanted he and Sadie, and then he and Paige to take the win). That said, I'm really enjoying several of the couples this year – it's fun to watch a season where everyone has their own unique talents. I like L&J (but then I always like Lindsay as a pro too); Frankie (who doesn't remember his popular teen flicks??); S&D; Victoria; and even Sasha, though I never did watch the PLL show. Still, I think she's doing well.

      Glad you stopped by! :)

    2. I haven't actually had the chance to watch The Brave yet, but it's definitely at the top of my list :) I'm so happy it impressed you, and am looking forward to reading that early thoughts post! Staying on the topic of military dramas, I think David Boreanaz's SEAL Team also looks like it'll be a really great addition.

Now, about Shooter; I watched the entire 1st Season over a two-day period, so yes, I would say it's VERY good!

Since my last comment, I've also managed to watch the first episode of The Gifted, and while I unfortunately didn't love it as much as most people seem to, it was a solid pilot with some pretty fantastic special-affects, so I'm still interested in seeing where it's going to go.

I think that it's kind of just a natural progression of a show to not have the same feeling attached to it in it's 2nd or 3rd season as it did in it's 1st, but I get what you mean by being disappointed when most shows opt for a 'darker' tone. However, I have high hopes for Lethal Weapon, though the first season is going to be hard to top!

The Ballas is a creative genius, I will say that! And the chemistry between ALL of the contestants and their pros this season is amazing; that and the celeb's obvious enthusiasm for the show makes it so much fun to watch.

    3. I keep meaning to watch the second episode of The Brave (before going for a published review) just to get a bit more perspective (plus it ends on a cliffhanger – #NOTCOOL!!). My rule for a new show is, give it 2-5 episodes (unless it’s TERRIBLE!) because I think that's when it really starts to hit its stride. Plus, the pilots are shot so much in advances of follow up episodes; the writers usually change minor issues in the interim. But I haven't. Yet. Maybe I'll remedy this tonight and get the review publish ready over the weekend.

In terms of military dramas, YES!! David's new series looks great. Hopefully I'll check that one out this weekend.

I've seen the pilot of The Gifted. Definitely interested but I did think the set up was a little… "messy," maybe?? I get invested in superhero series early on and then, for some reason, I wane in keeping current with them. This happened to S.H.I.E.L.D., Arrow, Supergirl, and The Flash. It's not that I don't still love them all, it's just that I, well, I don't know WHAT my excuse is.

Changing TV shows IS a natural thing. I agree – and in fact, I don't mind growth (especially if it's a character arc). Same as with people, stories should change in the name of growing. That said, I just wish the lighthearted feel wasn’t what they sacrifice. I’m so glad the first season of Lethal Weapon is a good one.

DWTS IS fun this year. What makes it more so is everyone has some natural talent, and because of this, yes. They all seem to be having fun. :D

      Thanks, as always, for visiting!!

  2. I just… I just want The 100 back. SOBS. FIneeee I'll look at these hah. So I have not actually been too keen on any of them, except a mild interest in Alias Grace? But I have heard great things about The Good Doctor, so maybe. And The Gifted keeps catching my eye but Idk, I don't *really* need to watch Bill Compton and Chloe Moretz's one facial expression, do I? Idk, you should watch these and tell me :D

As for returning shows, I only really care about This is Us and Jane the Virgin. And I do want to start watching The Handmaid's Tale at some point!

    1. Aw, is The 100 over?? That's always a bummer when our favorite shows either kill characters off… or END!! Like, #NotCool, TV shows. :D

I hear The Good Doctor is doing really well. I do have the pilot in my iTunes account, so I'll watch it at some point. The Gifted is one I really one to see too… especially as a lover of superhero shows/movies.

I watched most of the first 'Jane' season, but then fell away from it. Now I'm mad because they killed off one of my favorite characters. :) Hope you enjoy the return of your anticipated shows, Shannon!!

…and I will. ;) You know me and my "addiction" to checking out the new fall TV (and of course, then blogging about it!).

  3. I'm definitely looking forward to Runaways. Inhumans and The Gifted both have me curious, with the Marvel angle. I'm so behind on Arrow and Blindspot I just gave up… :(

    1. YES! Gotta love all the superhero theme shows!!

I'm SO behind on Arrow too. Makes me sad because I do love the show and its characters. At the point I stopped (because I got distracted by something else, no doubt), I'm still liking Blindspot. But we'll see if this holds up! :D

    1. Did you like The Gifted, Lauren?? I haven't watched it yet, but will in the next couple of weeks. :)

Me too! Even though I'm not caught up on Poldark, it's still a guilty pleasure. :)
