Casting Scoop: Cinderella

by

Fairy-tales have been re-invented a lot lately. Spurred on by ABC’s delightful Once Upon a Time, Disney has begun remaking many of its classic fables that are as old as time. Yesterday, while pursuing the Internet, I discovered some fun casting news tidbits and rumors for the upcoming live-action version of Cinderella. The bad news is that it’s not supposed to be around until 2014, the good news is that supposedly Cate Blanchett has been cast as the “evil stepmother,” and let’s face it, she is going to be awesome in this role!

Here is what Inside Movies (EW) has to say about this casting news:

• Emma Watson might get the princess treatment in Kenneth Branagh’s live action adaptation of Cinderella for Disney. Cate Blanchett has already been cast as the wicked stepmother. Watson is only in early talks at this point, so although it seems like the shoe fits, it might be best not to get too attached to the idea of her as Cinderella

This was back on February 28th and the news that Emma was in the running for Cinderella have been debunked. Supposedly she is still set to star in a Beauty and the Beast re-make. Now, here are the names being talked about for the role of Cinderella.

  • Alicia Vikander – Anna Karenina (2012)
  • Saoirse Ronan – Atonement
  • Gabriella Wilde  – The Three Musketeers (2011)

I’ve also seen Amanda Seyfried mentioned way back when. Since I am unfamiliar with most of these young actresses credits, there is no clear frontrunner but based strictly on looks, I like Gabriella – with her blond hair (in this photo), she has the “Cinderella look.” What about you all? Who would you like to see playing Cinderella? Or even the prince? Who would be your dream cast…

  1. Ooooo, yay! I hadn't heard they were doing this, but I'm certainly happy about it! Cinderella is such a fun story. :) I don't think I'd like Amanda as C…C isn't supposed to be a tough princess, but not quite so…how to say it? Innocent and soft and wide-eyed as Amanda seems (at least in LesMis). Cate as the evil stepmother…interesting! Can't quite picture that. But she was sometimes almost a scary person in Lord of the Rings as Galadriel, so it might work! She certainly has some piercing eyes. Can't wait to see who the prince is! It'd better be someone I like…just saying. Maybe Eddie Redmayne? Not handsome enough, I fear (sorry Eddie! But PC needs to be a knock out…), but his personality is so loveable. Colin Firth wouldn't work. Now or in the 90s. Too…solemn, elegant, something. Who else though? I have trouble thinking of actors without someone else mentioning them first. Off the top of my head isn't working. Your thoughts? Wow, this comment kinda got really long…oh well, I know you don't mind TOO much. ;)

    1. I don't mind saying, long comments are the coolest, Charity. They are kinda' awesome. :)

Amanda as Cinderella would work for me though she's more of a "classic" pretty than a stunning actress. (Ironically when I was typing this, I thought, "um, Charity wouldn't like her cast." Because we'd just chatted about her in Les Mis. :D) Cinderella isn't one of the "tougher" princesses, that I agree – not like Belle anyway but then recent adaptations have made Snow more feisty, so… anything's possible!

Yeah, I wouldn't want to see Eddie. He's too "cute" looking with those freckles. Hmm… who'd I want to see… well, I like some of the "fresh" faces that have began to be the new generation of leading men – usually I cannot think of their names though!. Kinda' like:

+ Sam Claflin – he's may be too… "cute" or too much of a "pretty boy"?
+ Max Irons – again… he's perhaps not right either

Nicholas Hoult is also an up-and-comer. If I were to guess, I'd say it will be someone like that. Maybe I'll come up with some more names and add them later…

Either way, I'm excited! This is a fav fairy-tale. :)

    2. SO MUCH YES to Bradley James. As I said. I like that one a lot!

Haha, yup, you're starting to read my mind on this Amanda S stuff. ;) I feel like Amanda as Cinderella would be totally soft. Like, no back-bone. Which I gotta admit, I abhor. So…

True, I'm afraid Eddie's freckles really wouldn't work with this (though they are perfect for some roles, I don't doubt!).

Loving all these PCharming options! :)

    3. Cool! Now he's done with Merlin… that could be a possibility, Charity. :)

The heroine with or lacking in gumption depends greatly on the character. If she is meant be a determined "spit fire," then that's the sort of heroine I want. If she's more of a "victim" than I don't want to see a heroine being tough. Nevertheless, I probably prefer the former also. :)

Haven't heard anything about the casting of Prince Charming though it's fun to speculate!

  2. Love Cate. Hope this movie is better than Mirror Mirror (ie, a little more grown up?). Have no opinion on Cinderella — but am glad Emma is going to be Belle (unless something changes).

    1. I loved Mirror Mirror but wouldn't mind a more serious take.

Cate is going to rule this role! I think. She is such a talent. Hopefully Emma will take the role of Belle in that eventual re-telling as she looks very elegant and will likely do the character justice. :)

  3. That is exciting! I didn't realize there was a new Cinderella being made! I look forward to hearing more about it! Thanks for the good news and the fun blog posting! :)

    1. As do I, Hniebel! Too bad we have to wait until sometime in 2014 for it. :/ Nevertheless, it's fun to speculate. :)

      Glad you stopped in. :)

  4. I'd heard about Cinderella but hadn't heard anything about Beauty and the Beast!? Yeah!
I go along with what Charity U was saying, I'm thinking maybe Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Dancy, james marsden, Jospeh Gorden Levvit (sp?) and while I'm dreaming here the perfect guy would have been Heath Ledger, but alas, he has left us too soon! =(
I love Amanda Seyfred for Cinderella!

    1. I'd like Amanda for Cinderella also, KatySue. :) She was rumored for the role way back when but I've not heard anything now. Everything I've seen Hugh in, I've liked, so I'd be cool with that casting; wouldn't like Tom because of his villain Loki (I'm weird that way ;D); like James Marsden just fine; Joseph… not sure he'd be right. He doesn't really have a "princely" look to me…

Oh, gosh! Heath Ledger was a wonderful talent. So many roles he would have been great in – sadly, yes, that is no longer a possibility.

  5. I agree. Gabriella has that Cinderella look- though it's probably just the blond hair. lol! Man, Cate Blanchett is SUCH an amazing actress I'm sure she'll do great with the role.

    1. Yeah, I suspect it's just the pic I put in here too, Rosie! I liked her in 'Musketeers' but her part was so small I cannot really judge her acting skills. :)

Cate is going to OWN this role. :)

  6. Mmmm, Tom H has the right build for a prince like this, don't love the looks though? Hugh D — hands down, perfect looks for a story-book prince like this. THAT has possibility. :D Wait, I didn't know he was with Claire Danes! Cool stuff, peoples. ;) James M, omw, love that smile. Again, liking that option! Joseph G-L — I like the touch of Asian. Looks like a calmer smoother guy, perhaps? I like it.

And yes. I went through and googled each of them to see what I though. ;) Rissi! Come back to us! We need your opinion! Not that you should spend all day on your computer or anything… ;)

    1. I'm here! Finally am stopping by to read and check out everyone's thoughts, Charity! :) Love these chats – I just don't always get around to commenting every day. Fortunately I've managed it this week.

Yeah, I don't vote for Tom just because of his Loki role – when I've seen someone as a bad guy first, it's hard to take that out of my head unless the actor does that good of a job. Like Hugh Dancy – a lot; James too is a good actor. Not thinking I'd like Joseph. Really don't know why. Perhaps he's just not a "princely prospect" to me…?

Sometimes just looking at an actor can be off-putting but you'd be surprised what the make-up people can do – an actor one doesn't like just by looking at the first Google pic to pop up may surprise us in the role. Stranger things have happened.

    2. So glad you made it, Rissi. :D ;) I too love these chats — your blog has the best ones!

It's true…makeup can do a lot. But at the same time…you google and go through enough images, it's pretty easy to form a first judgment. Of course, that can always be overturned though!

    3. As am I. Today I was writing a book review and got delayed with other things also and finally figured I'd better play catch up with the blog/Twitter. :) Every conversation that gets going here is in thanks to all of you – and I cannot say how much I appreciate them! Selfishly, I find them a blast. :)

Usually I find images via fan sites of each respective star so I don't always use Google for a photo. Some people can be transformed in a movie, other's look worse!

  7. I'm excited now :D A Cinderella movie would be pretty neat! I'm not sure who I would cast for Cinderella. She's a delicate character…it kinda has to be perfect. I could see Amy Adams with blonde hair working, but otherwise I'm not really sure. For the prince…hmmm. Lucas Till maybe? :P He's got that sweet, prince charming look to him. :D

    1. As we've been saying her on this comment thread, Sierra, Cinderella is more of an "innocent" character as a opposed to a rebel like Belle. You said it right: She's delicate. It will be interesting to see who gets the role. Amy is adorbs! Her Giselle character is too cute in Enchanted. (There are also rumors of a sequel to that one and if the principal cast would return, I see Disney making that one. Yay!)

Lucas is cute. I liked him in X-Men and wouldn't mind seeing him in some other roles too. :)

    2. Am not ashamed to say that I'd actually be giddy about a sequel to Enchanted, Sierra. That is one of the BEST feel-good, happy-go-lucky films I've seen to this day. Adore that one. :)

  8. To be honest, I'm actually more excited about the remake of Beauty and The Beast; it's my favorite fairy tale and it's based on my favorite book "Beauty" by Robin McKinley, if you haven't read it, you need too!

As far as Cinderella, if Kenneth Branagh is doing the movie, no doubt it'll be great! I think Emma Watson would be a wonderful Cinderella, but I don't want her to be typecast as a 'fantasy actress' (Harry Potter does count as fantasy). Does that make sense?? Amanda Seyfried would be good and as well as Alicia Vikander, she has a very simple beauty about her that I like.

Or Jessica Brown-Finlay! She would be perfect (who says Cinderella has to be blonde??)!! Change of plan, Jessica is my Cinderella!!!

Oh, have you heard about the "Maleficent" movie coming out next year with Angelina Jolie?? Seriously, I cannot wait to see it! Supposedly, Angelina's four year old daughter, Vivienne, is playing little Brier Rose, that's so sweet.

    ~Ivy

    1. The Beauty and the Beast sequel has me equally excited, Ivy. Anything fairy-tale I go for as it's a favorite genre and one of my guilty pleasures. Only heard good things about Robin's novel so someday I'll read it. :) Loved Alex Flinn's Beastly and enjoyed the cute movie adaptation so I know I'd like Robin's book also.

Having never seen Alicia in anything, I didn't know what to say about her. She would no doubt be fine considering she was in the recent Anna Karenina re-make (a costume drama). Amanda would be good also and yes, I understand what you are saying about Emma Watson. She'll be a good Belle though. If she ends up taking the role. *fingers crossed*

Jessica is a favorite actress – because of 'Downton.' Always will have a soft spot for Sybil. :) And yes, I'm anxious to see her in other roles! Cinderella doesn't have to be a blonde – it's just always how we have seen her hence their is a bit of an image of a blonde-haired beauty fixed in our minds much like Snow White is always a raven-haired young women with red lips. :)

All of these fairy tale re-imaginings are making me giddy – including Maleficent. Not sure if I like Angelina taking the role but I'm still thrilled about it! Cannot wait – and it'll be sweet to see her little girl playing a young Brier Rose.

      Now… where is 2014!? ;)

  9. I, for one, am so happy to see fairy-tales given a reboot! All we've had for "visualization" of our favorite happy-ever-afters have been either cartoons or comedy spin offs. So three cheers for fairy-tale movies! I'm also glad that Emma Watson is NOT going to be Cinderella and I wish she wasn't going to be Belle…I still can't get beyond her being Hermione (I'm afraid she's stereotyped completely in mind!), I still can't see her as anything other than a little girl/teenager…and playing Belle? She seems way to young for such a part. It will be interesting to see how well these are going to turn out! I'll be in the theaters to see them for sure. :)

    1. You can bet I'll be seeing these also, Kellie – whenever they finally are cast and get into production. ;)

Yes, indeed, it's high time all these fairy-tales get their dues. And I am beyond excited. Cartoons only go so far! LOL!

Having not seen Emma in the role that made her famous (it's not a series I am interested in), I don't have that image in my mind. However, I can see where fans of that series or her character may have to "get over" that notion before they'd be able to think of her in a new role like this. I think she'll be good as Belle.

For now… all we can do is dream and wonder. :)

    1. Hopefully, Maria! *fingers crossed* It has great promise already.

LOL! Well, one never knows – Tom Hiddleston could be cast. Likely it will be someone who is becoming popular now – and he certainly is.

  10. ooh! I've heard of the first two, but not seen them in anything. Gabriella didn't have a huge part in the Three Musketeers, but I liked her five-minute screen-time. lol (she's also been a side-role in a Doctor Who s5 ep!) She's definitely got the sweet and innocent look of Cinderella–not to mention the blond!

I thought I saw something a little bit ago about Emma Watson playing Belle in a new adaption of Beauty and the Beast. . . so it would make sense if she couldn't fit in Cinderella, too. I admit I'm glad she's Belle rather than Cinderella–I think she'd be a perfect BelleBeauty, depending on the adaption.

Now I can't wait to hear who the Prince will be, naturally ;) Rather than make my own guesses, I like to be pleasantly surprised. Usually I just can't make up my mind! After all, a good actor can play any role. Of course, that doesn't mean one or two actors pop out as excellent choices for certain roles. . . but I don't have any clue here. Somebody mentioned Alex Pettyfer and/or Bradley James. . . and I absolutely accept either one! ;) ;)

I'm such a sucker for fairy tales, I love hearing about new re-makes :) thanks for sharing!

    1. You and I both, Jess-Rose! Lovin' all these fairytale-esque things/productions and am indeed a sucker for all of them. :)

Saw Saoirse in Atonement and another small, "indie-like" film as well as Gabriella then in 'Musketeers' just not Alicia. Gabriella has that look in this photo but another pic may suggest she wouldn't be. This one pictures her as a perfect choice. :)

Agree. Emma will do better as Belle. Or that is my thought. She has that classic beauty; her features and styling seem more suited to Belle than Cinderella. Likely she'll do justice to the role also – she's more than a pretty face. Or that's my impression.

Oooh! The prince casting is a source of… well, curiosity. ;) I am rooting for someone good-looking (obviously!) and princely. Alex or Bradley could pull it off methinks. After all, Bradley has already played an arrogant albeit loveable prince. As for Alex, he was a bit too much of a "teenage cute" (Beastly) but in more recent photos I've seen, he has gotten more mature looking so he could step into those shoes. ;)

Thanks for sharing, Jess! So excited about all these fables. :)

    1. Hello, Angela! Thank you so much for visiting – happy that you shared your input. Feel free to visit again anytime. :)

There's still hope, Angela, right now, her casting as Belle looks really positive! And she has more of the look of Belle than Cinderella. Or that is my thought. :)

  11. Comment the third. ;) Lucas Till…I like it. I can definitely like a blond as PCharming, and he's got a great smile too. Sam Claflin…ooo, Cinderella herself would pass out with that much adorbs in front of her. ;) Yeah, pretty princely I admit! Max Irons…don't love the eyes? Nicholas Hoult…nope. Too young. And everyone's going to associate him with "Warm Bodies." I saw a trailer for that perforce…YUCK. ***gasp*** BRADLEY JAMES. YES PLEASEPLEASEPLEASE. I LIKE IT A LOT. He was so awesome in Merlin… Alex P — not bad! and love that smile. I like that. ;) And not cute enough. Cute is important in a Prince Charming…

No! Cinderella HAS to be blond. Simply must. ;)

Back later to reply to your comments to me, Rissi. And I'm glad you're here! ;)

    1. Lucas could work in a "aw-shucks-cute" sorta way. He was good in X-Men. Wasn't sure I liked Sam in SWATH (but really, he was up against Chris Hemsworth, so…) though his character was interesting in Pirates 4. As a result, the actor has become one I'm curious to see where his career may go. Yeah, not sure I'd be thrilled with Max Irons (it was just a name I thought of who's become a bit of a movie "heartthrob") either BUT I like him better than the other dude who co-starred with him in Red Riding Hood. Agree with you about Nicholas also – again, he was just another up and comer. Although I am skeptical about Alex judging strictly from his Beastly role, more recent pics suggest he looks more "mature" so I could live with that also. ;)

I think Cinderella should be blonde also… if the actress is really good, a brunette wouldn't ruin anything. We'll see if casting directors agree.

  12. oh my goodness! I can't wait to see it! I was wondering just the other day if they were going to make cinderella a real movie. that is sooo fun! and that would be fun to see if the little mermaid got to be made into a real movie too! thanks for sharing.

    –Rachel S

    1. Yes – looking forward to it, Rachel. If done right, it could be one of 2014's best gems. :)

Ooooh! A live-action mermaid re-make would also be delightful. As a child, that was my most favorite Disney flick. Or so I am told. :)

Glad you stopped by to share in our enthusiasm.

  13. I am in love with the idea of Disney bringing all of my animated fairy tale faves to life. Even though it wasn't Disney I liked Snow White and the Huntsman a lot and of course I'm a huge fan of Once Upon a Time. I love Cate Blanchett, she has the right look to be the evil stepmother. I think it's those cheekbones that could cut glass LOL! I'm waiting for the live action Lion King. Wouldn't THAT be fun?! Oh my!

    xoxo,
    Renee C.

    1. You and I both, Renee! So glad Disney is producing all of these. Not only are they fun, they're also creative and imaginative. SWATH was way better than I expected (so good); really liked the twist involving Snow and the Huntsman instead of she and William. Excited for that eventual sequel also. Should be good!

Did you ever see Mirror Mirror? Loved that one also but it's definitely "cutesy" and light-hearted as opposed to serious. :)

'Once' is awesome – looking forward to the S2 DVD's.

Cate is going to own this role. I think. Much like Charlize did for SWATH, I think Cate will over shadow whoever is cast as Cinderella… we shall see with time. :) Oooh! Lion King would take much creativity – if done right, it'd be EPIC.

    2. I have not seen all of Mirror Mirror. I tried to watch it and got distracted by something or other and never got back to it. It did seem cute though so I'm definitely going to have to finish it. I love Julia Roberts too so yet another reason to see it through!

      xoxo,
      Renee

    3. It is cute, Renee. Silly but cute. It's one of those flicks that you can watch without having to think. The prince was a bit too silly for my tastes (sometimes!) yet he's cute whereas Lily Collins personifies Snow perfectly – plus gives her some sass. ;)

Julia seems to have WAY too much fun with her role which in turn makes it fun for us. Hope you like it if you finish it out. :)

  14. I would love to see Saoirse Ronan as Cinderella!! She is amazing.
I don't know who i want as prince yet. I guess Ian Somerhalder (From the vampire diaries) or Matthew Lewis (from harry potter).
I am very excited for this movie, because Cate Blanchett will be part of it and she will be so good (just as in any of her other movies)
Too bad we have to wait till 2014, but we don't have a choice :)

    1. Cate Blanchett will "own" the role of the stepmother – or that has been my impression of her prior roles. As for Cinderella, I haven't heard any names that I'd love to be honest. So far. Ian could work for the prince – he has those "classic," aristocratic features.

Thanks for stopping by, Sanne. Visit again anytime. :)
