‘HATS OFF TO CHRISTMAS’ (2013)

by

Heartwarming always works at Christmas and this cute little piece of fluff is like a sweet candy cane. Haylie Duff plays a single mom, Mia who has a lot on her plate. Between caring for her son and healing from the death of her husband, she’s eager for a promotion, and better hours to spend more time with her son, Scotty (Sean Michael Kyer). For ten years Mia works at Hats off to Christmas and in those years, she’s worked her way up to manager. How wrong these hopes end up being. Instead she is asked to train the boss’ son, (Antonio Cupa) whose fancy college education and keen business sense grooms him to take over the company.

While watching this movie, the probability of anyone forgetting that it takes place at Christmas is slim to none. (Because much of the movie takes place inside of a store front packed wall to ceiling with adorable Santa-style hats!) This means, there’s some fun scenes of window decorating and silly antics between the workers. While it’s fun to see Cupo in another movie, I must confess to being partial to his prior Hallmark, Love at the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Nonetheless, this film is too cute to complain rigidly about. This is true aside from Mia’s stereotype annoyance (and maybe her wardrobe, which doesn’t compliment), and her character is a little wishy-washy.

Once you accept that, this film really is cute in a fluffy feel-good way… and I love every minute of it! Unlike most of its
counterparts, this does span a much longer timeframe. It’s important to remember this, so instead of taking place the two weeks before Christmas, this one begins before Halloween. The emphasis on family and its importance is precious and Scotty is one great kid (his cute speech is sweet). If you’re in the mood for decorating your tree or want a wholesome family movie night, don’t miss this Hallmark Christmas title.

  1. I would have really liked this movie except that I couldn't stomach Haylie Duff. She acted petulant and all her "concern" for her son came off like it (and she) was all about her. I know it's a holiday movie but her son walks and she takes it like a green light to make a move on the guy. She was repulsive. What a shrew. Too bad, really the rest of the cast and the movie would have been charming.

    1. Sorry — I meant to include my name, Sara. And I agree with you that Antonio Cupo was better in LATDP! He would have been so much better here with Hillary Duff! They would have been so cute together.

    2. I didn't mind Haylie… she and Hilary were fun together in Material Girls though I will admit that this wasn't my favorite Hallmark. As you say, Hilary would have been good in this role though. Sorry you didn't enjoy the film because of Haylie; I liked how "jolly" the movie was (which was helped by the setting) but did think Haylie's character was as bit of a contradiction. Anyway, it was still cute. :)

Antonio was GREAT in 'Thanksgiving Day Parade.' I loved him and Autumn together. So cute.

Thanks for visiting, Sara. Please do so anytime.
