‘An Ideal Husband’ (1999)

by

Hey, readers. Tonight I want to share a new review. This one isn’t in our archives here, but I have all the details of where you can read my latest review, An Ideal Husband. Why did I decide to share this external review? Well, because it’s an amazingly fun and romantic costume drama. And from past experience, we all know, costume dramas are favorites among us.

If you’re unfamiliar with the name or the story, it’s an adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s play. The 1999 film stars Jeremy Northam, Cate Blanchett, Minnie Driver and Rupert Everett. (Also, Everett will, by the way, will join the third season of The Musketeers next year.) Made during Miramax’s “frenzy” of costume dramas (Jane Eyre, Emma, Mansfield Park, etc.), this is actually, to this day, one of my personal favorites.

I had the chance to review An Ideal Husband for Silver Petticoat. Of course, the opportunity to promote this “classic” a bit was smashing. More recently, my mom and I decided to re-watch this for the first time in at least five years. The discovery I made is it’s just as much of a sassy delight the fifth time I’ve seen it as it was that very first viewing…

Whether you’re considering watching it for the first time or this reminds you to re-discover it, I invite to find out why you might enjoy An Ideal Husband. (Review snippet + link is below.)

An Ideal Husband – A Sassy Story about Blackmail… and Romance

This 1999 comedy is inspired by one of Oscar Wilde’s plays and gives us a carefree good time if nothing else. As a teen, this was one of the films I’d watched all the time, but it was only recently that I finally saw it again after a handful of years without reliving it. Because of its relevant wit, talented cast and brilliant story, this film only grows stronger with time. It may not be an “important” movie with significant vignettes for life’s journey, but it’s beyond just a “good time.” Read the review in full →
