Lori Loughlin (who can also be seen in Hallmark’s drama, When Calls the Heart) returns as Jenn Shannon, a garage sale fanatic which as it would happen is what keeps her in business. As part owner of a consignment shop, Jenn sees the most unique of items come through her shop. Her latest find is a one-of-a-kind surf board, which she buys at a low cost for a client. The client, Ann (Chiara Zanni), is a newcomer to their small town, and along with her husband, Steve, she invites Jenn and her husband, Jason (Steve Bacic) to dinner.

When Steve turns up dead – under suspicious circumstances, Jenn decides to investigate the troubling inconsistencies. Much to the vexation of her husband, and the weary cop (whom she pulls into each of her scenarios), Jenn again sets about untangling the mystery.

Starting way back in 2013, this film franchise seems to be one of Hallmark’s most popular. Each time I see a new one, it’s not difficult to see the “why” behind this. Each one of these is smart while still maintaining a sense of “light hearted” humor and fun. This is all thanks to Jenn’s home life, which includes the cute banter she shares with her husband, Jason (who is constantly trying to get Jenn to let go of following in Miss Marple’s footsteps) and her kids, Logan and Hannah. It’s nice to see the home life of the
character, and that it’s mostly kept separate from the story “act” that is the mystery.

Since they premiered, there has been an entire string of films in this series. ‘The Beach Murder’ is the latest and first in a string of four set to premiere throughout August. Speaking of the mystery, this one is entertaining to puzzle through and also gives its viewer a little bit of suspense as it leads towards the crucial conclusion. What I liked most about this one was the easy comfort between the cast members. Though there were some shifts in the earlier films, this cast has now been together for several films,
and that shows on screen. There’s also a cute subplot involving Logan, and a Shakespeare play.

As of now, I’ve not seen the entire franchise. (There’s one film and part of one I have yet to see.) That said, each time I play one (and I plan to catch up and be ready to enjoy the three other films in coming weeks), the mystery pulls me in, but also engrossing is the continued normality of the lives in a day of these characters. It’s fun to catch up with them and see where they’re at and what goals they’re next to pursue. One of Jenn’s most favorite pursuits being sleuthing of course. A pursuit, I suspect she’s not about to give up any time soon.
