Summer 2018 TV: Your Exciting & New TV Obsession is Here!

Summer 2018 TV | Your Exciting & New TV Obsession is Here!

This might be a little late in coming considering many of the summer TV shows have already aired their pilot episodes. Nonetheless, summer TV (or let’s face it, any new TV season) is one of my favorites so this list is written in the stars. At least in the style of Finding Wonderland’s ‘stars’ it is.

As I look at the slate of upcoming TV, the ones that most excite me are TV shows that have no U.S. premiere date and are instead making a splash in Canada or Australia. That said, of course, TV addict that I am, there are some shows I’m eager to give a chance with stars I’m excited to see return to our TV screens.

Below you’ll seen mostly new 2018 offerings with a couple of returning shows throw into the mix – because they’re that good.

Summer 2018 TV | Your Exciting & New TV Obsession is Here!

(listed by premiere date)

1: Reverie

Network: NBC | Premiered May 30 | When: Wednesdays

Photo: NBC

Already familiar to summer TV addicts, Sarah Shahi headlines this one. It’s about a former hostage negotiator who solves murders with the help of virtual reality. It’s so excited to see Sarah in another summer TV show after the cancellation of Fairly Legal and pass on her modern-day Nancy Drew pilot. Though I’m not sure what I think of the sci-fi angle of this one, I like that the lead is a hostage negotiator thanks to one of my favorite novels by Dee Henderson, The Negotiator. This one is also giving me Stitchers vibes!

2: Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger

Network: Freeform | Premiered June 7 | When: Thursdays

Recently I saw the headline toting this as Freeform’s biggest “launch” in two years. That’s pretty impressive though I suspect much of this has to do with Marvel in its title. I’ve not watched this one either (same goes for Reverie), but it’s one I’m curious about just because Marvel! The story follows two teens, who discover their superpowers work best together – all while falling in love.

3: Take Two

Network: ABC | Premieres June 21 | When: Thursdays

Photo: ABC

From the creators of Castle, this one looks really (really) fun. While its upside is that it looks like the perfect frothy summertime vendor, the downside is, it’s likely a little too similar to Castle. Don’t mistake me, I don’t mind this, but I’m worried it might not earn the ratings because of this. It’s about an actress (Rachel Bilson) looking to partner with a cop (Eddie Cibrian) to study the profession for an upcoming role.

4: Anne with an E, Season Two

Where: Netflix | When: July 6

Photo: Netflix

Though if ever I do watch this, this will be new to me, I realize this is also a show with a season already to its name. I’ve not binged season one as of yet, but have read conflicting thoughts, and opinions on this one. Tell me, have you seen this more contemporary approach to the classic L.M. Montgomery novels?

5: The Outpost

Where: CW | Premieres July 10 | When: Tuesdays

Newcomer Jessica Green stars as a woman out for revenge on those who murdered her family. The show is given a sci-fi treatment that is sure to look and feel at home on this network. The only question is if the story too will appeal.

6: Burden of Truth

Network: CW | Premieres July 25 | When: Wednesdays

Kristin Kreuk returns to TV in this legal drama. Previously starring in Smallville and Beauty and the Beast, Kristin is sure to feel right at home with this return to her network. Burden of Truth is a Canadian drama about a young lawyer who returns to her hometown to help a group of girl’s suffering from an unknown illness.

7: Endeavour, Season Five

Network: PBS | Returns August 1 | When: Sundays

Ok, so this is the second “returning TV” rather than new show, but it’s so good, it deserves a special shout out. For anyone unfamiliar with this one, it’s a drama set in the 1960s about a cop named Endeavour Morse. The supporting cast and its lead Shaun Evans are superb! I watched the fifth season with my parents last month and found it captivating – and the romance in this show? It’s like a slow burn at its most subtle, but also at its finest.

8: Chesapeake Shores, Season Three

Network: Hallmark Channel | Returns August 5 | When: Sundays

Photo: Hallmark Channel / Crown Media Press
This one isn’t a new-to-TV series in 2018, but it’s so sweet I had to add it. This is without a doubt my favorite of Hallmark’s original series with exception to the ongoing back-and-forth on-and-off romance between its protagonists Abby (Meghan Ory) and Trace Riley (Jesse Metcalfe). Were it not for this, I’d easily given this all the stars. (But despite this conflict, I still adore this show – it’s one of my favorites to unplug, sit back and enjoy.)

9: The Innocents

Where: Netflix | When: August 24

Another YA spun Netflix original, this one takes the main idea of Romeo & Juliet star-crossed lovers and tosses in some sci-fi. Specifically of the shapeshifter variety of sci-fi. To me, it appears a little too intense for the kind of TV I’m seeking out, but it’ll find an audience.

10: Jack Ryan

Where: Amazon Prime | When: August 31

Based on the novels of the same name written by Tom Clancy, this time John Krasinski steps into the titular role of CIA agent Jack Ryan. Presumably some influences of the earlier big-screen film adaptations will creep in, but I’m eager to see how Amazon produces an actioner! Abbie Cornish and Wendell Pierce co-star.

Returning TV | Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix, May 1); Younger (TV Land, June 5); Poldark (BBC1, June 9); The Bold Type (Freeform, June 12); Shades of Blue (NBC, June 17); Young and Hungry (Freeform, June 20); Shooter (USA Network, June 21); Queen of the South (USA Network, June 21); Endeavour (PBS, June 24); Salvation (CBS, June 25); Anne with an E (Netflix, July 6); Suits (USA Network, July 18); Wynonna Earp (ScyFy, July 20); The Sinner (USA Network, August 1).

  1. Oooh! I haven't heard of Reverie but I'm off to see if it is on Hulu! I'm always looking for new shows! The Innocents also sounds really good! My most anticipated summer TV is Orange is the New Black!

    1. Me too, Tracy – despite the fact that I should finish some of the shows I've started, I keep seeking them out. ;)

Hope you enjoy The Innocents and the return of 'New Black.' :)

  2. We've watch the first two episodes of Cloak & Dagger, and so far so good! I'm waiting for The Bold Type to get on demand because I couldn't watch it live. Also didn't realize Young & Hungry was coming back!

    1. I'm so glad C&D is good, Angela. Makes me happy – but then 99% of the time, I love anything by Marvel. :)

Hope you enjoy The Bold Type, and I think this is the final season for Young & Hungry. :)

  3. Ooooooh a few of these sound right up my alley! The 100 is going to be leading into Outpost so I will probably just watch that one by default because… if they're putting The 100 as a lead-in, come on! But also, I LOVE the sound of The Innocents! So you're right about an audience! I have to go look up more info, see if there's a trailer yet, thanks for the heads up about these shows!!

I will be watching… oh goodness, why bother, you know what I'll be watching :D

    1. Hope you enjoy The Outpost, Shannon! I'll likely check it out too, just because. I've never seen an episode of The 100 thought. :)

Sure!! Hope you enjoy The Innocents – and you found the trailer. I saw it. In fact, I almost added all of the trailers, but at some point because videos are deleted or moved, they no longer play, and I like to keep things working/clean. :D

YAY! Hope you discover some new keepers – let me know what you think of these. :)

  4. To be honest, Summer TV has become a bit of a yawn-period for me lately; Salvation and Poldark are my saving graces this year, though I am also quite curious to see John Krasinski's take on Jack Ryan. Having loved Harrison Ford in the role, it'll be interesting to see what another actor I admire will do with it.

In regards to Hallmark Channel however, I am REALLY excited about everything I've read so far concerning the original films airing in their Summer Nights programming event; Love on Safari, Pearl in Paradise, and Season for Love in particular sound awesome! When it comes to Chesapeake Shores though, I completely agree with what you said; I ADORE Abby and Trace as a couple, but am more than a little annoyed at the direction the writers are taking their relationship, with all this on-off nonsense. Just let them stay together and be happy, please!

Lastly, you asked about Anne with an E… I personally have not seen it, and that is because I unfortunately came across some disappointing information detailing certain events that occur which in no way, shape, or form belong in the world of Avonlea which L. M. Montgomery created.

    God Bless,
    Eleanor Rose

    1. Nothing wrong with that, Eleanor. :)

My patience is wearing VERY thin with Poldark (character). I think I stopped mid S2 basically because of all I'd read that is yet to come. I wish writer's would give us a solid male character who didn't go around breaking the heart of the woman who truly loves him – give him flaws, yes. But be original!! :/

I've not seen Salvation (at least I don't think I watched the pilot…), but I've heard it's lots of fun!

Hallmark's summer programming has me SO excited. I love that they're taking us on armchair adventures this year. Also, YES! The "Trabby" drama needs to end. They deserve to be happy. Once again, put some flaws in their lives (if writer's feel the need), but let them be together!!

Anne with an E is getting LOTS of criticism and praise. The controversy surrounding its first season was interesting to follow. I've seen lots of writer's/bloggers praise it, and other viewers express extreme disappointment. I do want to give it a chance (at some point), I just haven't yet.

As always, I'm so glad you stopped by, Eleanor! Thank you. :)
